I have heard from constituents voicing their concerns as everyone is dealing with the current COVID-19 outbreak. I know there is a lot of stress and anxiety that you may feel with regards to your health and the health of your family. As your Member of Parliament, along with my New Democratic colleagues, we have been asking for direct help for Canadians and are encouraged to see many of the concerns that we raised addressed by the government. We have secured financial support for workers who don't have access to EI, this includes people who are self-employed. The government agreed to extend the tax filing deadline to June 1, 2020. Also, a six-month moratorium on student loan interest has been put in place. These measures are a good first step by the government but, more still needs to be done. For example, the government is forcing many small businesses to keep their doors closed while offering just 10 per cent to help with wages, when many countries are offering up to 75%. It is concerning that this may not be enough to protect jobs. I will keep the pressure on the government to make sure any and all efforts are directed to those who are in need the most. I am taking the direction from public health officials and with their recommendations I am working to do my part in the prevention of the spread of COVID-19. Out of concern for everyone’s health I have taken the step of closing the constituency office to public walk-ins. There has been a lot of information being announced by the government over the last few weeks and I understand it is hard for many people to keep up with the constantly evolving situation.
